Distribution branding and Stripes
Some time ago, Nuno was talking about us (KDE) modifying/adapting artwork we have to suit distributions so that both KDE and distribution brand can be retained. (if someone has the link to the blog posts in question, I’d be much obliged)
So, without a further ado, the preview version of a Debian-specific version of the Stripes wallpaper:

get the larger version (currently only 1440×900) at deviantArt
edit: Multiresolution archive now available on kde-look and via GHNS.
So, if you maintain (or whatever you call it) artwork for your distro, and would like to have a distro-branded version, just send me an e-mail or find me on IRC.
p.s. Why Debian? I’m using it and the swirl looks awesome in Stripes
p.p.s. I know marketing people will not like the idea of distorting their logos, but… it looks rather cool!

In one word, WOW.
this is a more thant interesting twist to the wallpaper realy wow
Comment by nuno — 12 August 2010 @ 18:51
@nuno: Thanks. This is something I did while making the wallpaper (the same day) but for KDE SC, Debian branding is out of the question
I just waited for 4.5 to be released in order to publish it
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 12 August 2010 @ 19:22
Amazing
It would be cool to make one with more contrast (more blue) and with kubuntu logo
Comment by sheytan — 12 August 2010 @ 19:43
Thank you Ivan! I have it now as my wallpaper.
Unfortunately still in KDE SC 4.4.5. I have been looking for information about KDE SC 4.5 and Debian, and it seems that we will not get it until the stable (6th) version of Debian is released…
Comment by Juan Manuel Márquez — 12 August 2010 @ 19:50
@sheytan: If Kubuntu wants to ship branded one, then, yes, I’ll do it… but, not with extreme makeovers like increasing contrast – wallpapers (in my opinion) should not draw too much attention and poke your eyes
@Juan Manuel Márquez: Not even in experimental? Fortunately, I’ve stopped using Debian’s KDE SC packages long time ago – so, I’m bleeding on the edge
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 12 August 2010 @ 19:56
@Ivan Čukić: I seems that no… (c&p from debian kde mailing list)
”
>Ok, squeeze is chilly and 4.5 won’t make it into squeeze anymore. I think
>thats a good decision. But what about an unofficial/experimental package?
>Any chance? That’d be great.
I’d rather our Debian team concentrate on fixing bugs in 4.4. I’d like it to
be in good shape by the time Squeeze is actually released. Maintenance of 4.4
(as far as backporting fixes, particularly security fixes) is likely going to
be a pain throughout the Squeeze lifetime, so might as well get used to it
now.
The team is small and overworked, so they may not have time for both, and I’m
certainly willing let my sid/experimental systems get a bit behind upstream to
have a more bug-free stable system on Squeeze release day.

Hi – I’m no artwork maintainer, however I’d appreciate an Arch Linux branded wallpaper.
Your branding isn’t too intrusive and looks awesome with the distortion effect!
+1 for more branded wallpapers!
Comment by Arno Rehn — 13 August 2010 @ 02:37
Wow! That’s the most gorgeous wallpaper I’ve seen since the oh-so-perfect \Air\ came out. I’m seriously hoping Kubuntu and Arch (or better yet th new Chakra distro) take you up on this offer.
Comment by Bugsbane — 13 August 2010 @ 03:34
Hi, +1 for an Arch Linux branded wallpaper.
Your work is awesome!
Thanks
Comment by Gabriel Morrison — 13 August 2010 @ 03:42
Looks really awesome!
I already switched to the “stripes” wallpaper as soon as I upgraded to 4.5, I’d use this one anytime if I were using Debian
Comment by Z — 13 August 2010 @ 07:00
Very nice, I had the same response as others here.
+1 for an Arch Linux one
(yes..I had to
Comment by sreich — 13 August 2010 @ 07:27
@sreich: @Gabriel Morrison: @Arno Rehn: @Bugsbane:
Well, you could always file a bug/feature request for your distro (they probably don’t read planetKDE that often)
@Juan Manuel Márquez:
Well, maybe it is for the better, but I still hope somebody will make a set of unofficial packages…
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 13 August 2010 @ 09:15
p.s. The reason I’d like the distros to ping me is so that I know whether they would like a different colour (for example green for openSUSE or something).
I can’t guarantee it would look good in another colour, but…
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 13 August 2010 @ 09:17
Fantastic piece of wallpaper, really! Can’t wait for the other distros to follow.
Btw, the blog you were referring to was initially not by pinheiro but aseigo, see http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2009/06/building-brand-together.html
And a response from pinheiro might have been this:

Comment by Ingo Malchow — 13 August 2010 @ 13:33
Yes, Debian will get KDE SC 4.5.x for the testing and sid users, but from another (temporary, unofficial) repository. It isn’t there yet but on irc.debian.org #debian-kde the topic message says it will come. Its just a waiting game…
Comment by lefty.crupps — 13 August 2010 @ 14:20
The problem with arch is that they have a policy of not patching stuff, so I don’t think that they’ll patch in custom wallpapers.
But if you make one, I can pretty much guarantee you that you’ll have a following of eternally grateful arch users.
(The official “arch blue” is #1793D1, I think, together with #333333/black and white.)
Comment by sandsmark — 13 August 2010 @ 16:24
@Ingo Malchow: Thanks for the links!
@sandsmark: Martin, as far as I see they change the KDE icon to Arch one. And I’m not suggesting they should replace the current one, just to add it to their wallpapers.
Anyhow, even distros that don’t say a word might get the /patched/ version. But those will have lower priority.
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 13 August 2010 @ 18:36
This wallpaper looks great!
Might you be able to do a screencast showing how you did it? Either way, thanks for a great looking wallpaper!
Comment by nathanbw — 15 August 2010 @ 01:57
@Ivan: Just to correct one thing: the Arch guys don’t change the KDE icon, the KDEMod guys (independents from Arch) do
Comment by Gabriel Morrison — 15 August 2010 @ 06:03
@nathanbw: Unfortunately, that’ll not happen anytime soon – I’ve got too many things on my plate at the moment. It would be rather cool if I recorded it while making though…
@Gabriel Morrison: Arch/KDEmod/Chakra… and you’re surprised people tend to get confused
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 15 August 2010 @ 12:00
@Gabriel Morrison:
Chakra/KDEmod does, but I believe Arch also ships a modified “start-here” icon in one of their official (but entirely optional) artwork packages.
Ivan:
Distro branding sounds like a great idea, but is there any chance of also doing one with upstream KDE branding as well? I love the wallpaper, but I think the K/Gear done in this style would be a nice modification.
Comment by Ffejery — 16 August 2010 @ 00:28
@Ffejery: Yes, probably
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 16 August 2010 @ 00:33
Wow, this is really nice. I saw you did one for Suse, any chance we might get one for Arch too please? I doesn’t need to be part of the distro!
Comment by fengshaun — 17 August 2010 @ 02:50
@fengshaun: As I said, I’ll probably do, but the distros that contact me have priority.
Comment by Ivan Čukić — 17 August 2010 @ 08:26
gracias. simplemente gracias por lo que se hace
Comment by kynacom — 20 August 2010 @ 11:44
Ivan, the stripes wallpapers are great, love them
How about one for gentoo? I have nothing to say there, so I can’t guarantee it’ll make it into the distribution, but I’m a user for many years, and I’d love to have my distro’s logo on that empty space below the weather
The logo is available as SVG from here. I think there is no further text needed.
Patrick.
Comment by Patrick — 6 September 2010 @ 15:19
@Patrick: Umm.. the links got screwed up, and “have nothing to say” is actually German… should be “have no say”…
Comment by Patrick — 6 September 2010 @ 15:23
@Patrick: Yes, Gentoo will follow. But, as I said, the /official/ requests go first, then the popular distros (as in how many requests I got) and then (maybe) even non-popular ones.
Gentoo is now scheduled after Arch.

“I know marketing people will not like the idea of distorting their logos, but… it looks rather cool!”
Not “marketing” people, but graphic designers. Well, at least you know that what you are doing is wrong from a branding point of view. It might look cool, but it is still wrong.
Comment by yrian — 19 September 2010 @ 14:04
@yrian: No, I’m not doing anything wrong.
It turned out that even marketing/branding/visdesign people like it.
